Gardeners have a secret. It is an obvious reality to them, and they often feel uncomfortable explaining their love for gardening - innocently believing we all know the secret. My best friend and lovely partner for 50 years, is Jayne, the avid caretaker of our little piece of nature, just outside Chicago.
When Jayne suggested we move to this property, I saw it as my first yard, and a playground for our two sons. Over the years, I have grown to understand, a little more each season, what the gardener's secret is... |

EXPLORE THE GROUNDS
The SanctuaryAs the years past, I realized what my lovely caretaker was doing. Jayne was just playing around, trying different plants, moving them, sharing and trading them, always planning for the coming season. Hours of playing in the dirt, pulling weeds, mixing soils, separating bulbs, saving seeds, planting, pruning, and watering.
And the secret was revealed... What looks like working is really playing! The passion for gardening is really just having the freedom to be creative with nature, and receive life's energy through your fingers, as you play in the dirt - it's amazingly simple. And sometimes, as Jayne says, "you get really pretty flowers and the occasion bumper crop of sweet raspberries - for the grandkids to pick!" |
